i think 160 is a bit excessive, especially in this day and age of global warming and international crisis. also, if you think about it, they could have shrunk the size quite a bit by maintaining the hard drive at a reasonable memory level. if you fall down with 160gb in your pocket it’s going to hurt a lot more than if you have, say, 40gb in your pocket due to the additional volume/mass. at some point we just have to say “enough’s enough!” with the memory wars. i mean if it’s 160 now it should be 200 next year and 365 the year after that! i see no end in sight.

i got an early release preview unit because my sister works at PG&E, which services cupertino (where apple is located).
first of all, let me say that this is a beautiful device. you will be the envy of everyone on the freeway while rocking to your 80gb of music. and the battery life is excellent, exactly as reported by apple.
the problem i have with it is the internet capability. i found that some sites weren’t working properly. i tried them from my computer at the same time, so i know it wasn’t the web server. i think they have blocked certain porn sites to prevent children from downloading dirty pictures. another thing, i tried to connect to skype through the web browser in order to use the ipod as a jerry-rigged cellphone. however, you will notice when you get one that there are no external speakers and no mic. apple should mention this on the box.
otherwise i’m pretty happy with the music playback feature and the fine print. i recommend the 80gb rather than the 160gb for obvious environmental reasons.

I find it quite offensive that apple would not include several operas (or at least arias) sung by the late Pavarotti. How dare they not pay homage to him in some small way? They could at least make the limited Pavarotti edition ipod. It’s appalling that they would make a “U2″ version of the ipod but not a Pavarotti version. I understand that it might have been a bit short notice, but this is important! The releases of products and movies were postponed after the Kennedy assassination, why isn’t Pavarotti deserving? He’s the greatest tenor of our time, Kennedy was just some democrat who thought he was a jelly donut and slept with Marilyn Monroe. I personally find it extremely disquieting that apple releases music playing devices without showing any respect toward music.

This small, portable music player is quite fascinating. It is composed of a synthetic byproduct of petroleum, known by most as plastic, though the exterior shell seems to be composed of a thin sheet of brushed aluminium (Al, atomic number 13). The “plastic” from which this device is constructed appears to be of the highest quality, however, when closely observed, I found it to be softer than desired, thus, it scratches easily. It plays music that is downloaded to it via a computer, either Macintosh or PC. This may be a deterrent to those of you who do not own a computer. When playing the music, it uses small phonic devices inserted into the ears. These are called “headphones”. Due to the nature of these “headphones,” dogs cannot listen to your music.
When listening to the music, I found it to be of satisfactory quality. This device has a large storage capacity which is its primary selling point. If you buy this device, you should be sure to have music to download to it, otherwise, there will be nothing to listen to. The music that I recommend is Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and Puccini. I find this music to be of superior quality, and worthy of listening to.
