Let’s start by saying, after using this product for just one trip the most carefree person on earth either ends up in psychotherapy or a mental hospital. Consider yourself warned.

I needed a car mount for my iPhone 3Gs after buying a navigation application (Navigon). Before looking at the products available I was so optimistic, I wanted a stable mount with a line out, charger and rotation. But that turned out to be a dream SO STOP LOOKING; there’s no descent not even indecent product in the market for that. The only one is TomTom’s car kit but it is expensive because of its GPS booster which currently only works with TomTom’s app.

So I settle with this Kensigton’s mount, and here are the cons that made me return it:

    1. Cradle’s flexible arms are not that secure and it can easily drop the phone

    2. Cradle is so shaky it won’t stand still, not even for a second and hence the therapy; they should use this instead of waterboarding I bet it’s more effective.

This is my first review but not my first return. After buying countless products from Amazon and spending thousands of dollars. For the first time I felt like writing one not just because of this product but my frustration with iPhone accessories. Is it really that hard to design a decent car kit or dock?

BTW I didn’t get this product for the vent mount, so no comment on that.

I used this mount for a few days now, and so far, I am pretty happy.

It looks good and feels very sturdy. The snapping system is strong enough to hold the iPod in place even on rough roads. It is super simple to snap and unsnap the iPod with just one hand.

Couple things I wish were a little different: I would like to see some sort of swivel motion closer to the suction cup. The stem is pretty stiff (yet flexible) and therefore not very adjustable for the first couple inches close to the suction cup or by the mount.

The long stem is a good option to adjust to various cars that have different depths of instrument panel, but if left unbent and unsupported, it makes it very bouncy. In my case, I shaped the stem in an S curve and place the mount in the corner of the windshield (by the mirror) instead of the more standard central position. The S curve shortens the overhang quite a bit a reduces vibration. Also, my iPod touch has the speaker output on the bottom, so the audio cable comes out from there. Once snapped into the mount, I slip the iPod down until the cable plug rests on the instrument panel, giving it some extra support and really limiting the bounciness. You just have the play around until you find a sweet spot. In my case, I had to keep lowering it so it wouldn’t get in my way but wouldn’t be blocked by the steering wheel.

For reference, I drive a 2003 Mini Cooper.

I agree with the other reviewers who stated that this mount works great with the iPhone 4. I previously used the Kensington Dash Mount (for the windshield) and while it did a somewhat satisfactory job, it still left me hoping for a better solution. After purchasing this mount, I will not be looking any further. As another reviewer mentioned, the clip is not a snug fit for the edges of the iPhone 4 but it suits my needs perfectly. I really like the simple squeeze-clip design, especially for horizontal mounting when I use my GPS navigation app. When I snap the iPhone into the clip, I have ZERO worries that the iPhone is going to fall out of it. I was hoping the vent mount option would work with my 2006 Ford Escape because it doesn’t take very long for my navigation app to heat up the battery, making the iPhone very hot to the touch. I’m happy to report that it works like a charm and now when I remove the iPhone from the clip it is always nice and cool, putting me more at ease about using the iPhone as a GPS in the first place. I uploaded a picture for those interested.

Edit: I HIGHLY recommend this mount for other iPhone 4 users that would be more likely to use the vent mount option with the iPhone in the horizontal screen position. If you are more likely to mount the phone in the vertical position, the Kensington Dash mount (K33446US) may be a better choice.

Grips well to the windshield. Rotates to portrait or landscape and grips the device nicely. Basically it does what it claims and hasn’t broken in three weeks of use.

Over the last several years I have purchased many car mounts for ipods, MP3 players, and cell phones. Each and every one broke due to a spring breaking in the contraption the held the device in the mount. So when I got my Eris and wanted to mount it in the car so I could see the Navigation through Google Maps as I was driving. I knew I needed a mount that didn’t have springs in it. I started searching on Amazon.com, the first place I always come when I know what I want, but don’t know the brand name of it. Kensington was the only one that fit the bill for my needs. Once it arrived I immediately put it on the windshield in the car, making sure the car was in the sun to test the suction limits of the windshield suction cup. It has yet to fall off, and every time I get in the car I pull and tug on it, still very secure. The arm is easy to move, but stable enough that it doesn’t flop around. The clip to hold the device is great it will hold my Eris, ipod classic, my friends iphone. I love that I can turn it vertical or horizontal without having to adjust a knob on the back. Great product, and not over priced.
